Golfers react to proposed putter ban, fed up with nitpicky rules

Early next year, the USGA will decide to carry out the proposed putter ban they announced last month (or not). Either way, a lot of people aren’t happy with the proposal, how it’s been handled, and what it means to a wonderful game that has seen its numbers of participants and courses dwindle in recent years.

Here’s how some recreational golfers reacted to the news on Facebook:

Cavan Hagerty: Though I have never used an anchored putter, there does not seem to be an advantage in using one. This was the wrong call by the USGA, and now it causes people to second guess people like Ernie Els because he won the British Open with an anchored putter.

Danny Brainard: So let me get this straight. Anchoring a putter is an advantage, but, using 8 men in your gallery to move a boulder so you can hit your shot is NOT an advantage over an opponent who has nobody in his gallery to move that rock?!? No wonder Tiger backs this new rule.

Matthew Finney: As an instructor I do not like this "ban" if you understand how a proper putting stroke works in terms of the movement of the head then you would see their really is no advantage of a "anchored" putter.

Hitoshi Tsuruoka: Why not ban caddies from golf courses? Using them is advantageous to one’s stamina. Please do not restrict fun for Sunday players with idiotic rules change.

Vance Welch: Gimmie my sticks, a ball, and a hole. Low score wins - That's the game. Who cares what the stroke looks like.

Bob Areddy: I don't understand the reason for the exception to anchoring against your forearm. Either way, I don't really care. 99.99% of amateur players don't follow the rules anyway, so this will only affect competitive rounds. I don't think the upper echelons of golf really understand how the weekend golfer plays a casual round of golf.

Thomas Heitman: And I now I am no longer a member of the USGA

Kevin Carson: USGA should be 'For the End of the Game'. If the USGA is worried about players leaving the game, meaningless decisions like this are certainly not going the help.

Rick Lloyd: What a waste of time and effort, why in the world don't you go after the elephant in the room "the ball" and stop making our grand old golf courses obsolete.

Glenn Mincy: I don't like any rules including this one that are implemented just for the sake of what professional golf needs are. They say it is for the long term good of the game, it has nothing to do with the average golfer and only make it more difficult for us.

Mike D. Schaller: If I want to use a belly putter golfing with my buddies on a weekend, I am going to continue. To hell with the USGA.

Scott Cronin: Make the game enjoyable and stop alienating people.

Douglas Honeyman: If it was a huge advantage, why isn’t the long putter in the winners circle more? Waste of time rule.

Patrick Oropallo: Fine for the best players in the world but why make a difficult game more difficult for the rest of us?

Cyrus Whitney: Chase more people away from golf! USGA learned nothing from groove debacle.

Randy Vickers: Do these people just not have enough to do? Some players have found a technique which improves, (at least in their minds), how they putt. Good for them! USGA needs to stay out of this one. And, no I don't use a long putter.

Ryan Coffey: Wow....how short sighted as an organization can you be? Lets ban lefthanders next, then that guy who plays with two gloves, and then Jim Furyks swing.

Jeff Thompson: What about landing in a divot in the fairway?? How fair is that??? If the ball is in the fairway, there is absolutely no unfair advantage by moving it a club length.

Michael Auerbach: Not cool USGA. Why take something away that makes the game more enjoyable? I for one won't be renewing my membership. Golf is hard enough.

Jamie Hudson: This is a travesty. Thanks for shrinking the game in America even more.

Mike Thompson: Not that you guys care but I along with many others will be dropping my USGA membership due to this rule change.

Peter Butler: The R&A and USGA are dinosaurs. In the face of declining participation and revenues they make it illegal for an amateur to use a method that can make the game more enjoyable.

MiddleBass Guy: Come on, USGA, get out of your self-righteous tower and understand what actual people (i.e. recreational golfers) are doing.

Paul Smith: Won't be renewing my membership. I don't even use a long putter. I like the rule for pros. But let the amateur do whatever he or she likes.

Is golf overly challenging?

News that the governing bodies of golf are interested in banning anchored putting from the game started a media firestorm last week. CBS Sports ripped the proposal. So did Golf Week. So did our own David Felker, president of Polara.

“Today's USGA and R&A proposed ruling is just another example of how the USGA has lost touch with the majority of golfers and the golf industry itself,” Felker said.

The primary rubbing point is many believe that golf is already challenging enough, if not too much. Lee Trevino thinks so, as does the Wall Street Journal. So do the hundreds of thousands of people who have purchased our anti-slice golf balls.

The way USGA imposes pro rules at all levels of the game is akin to playing softball with MLB rules. Or driveway basketball with NBA ones. Or turkey bowls with NFL rules. You get the idea.

The reason this analogy works is that only 14% of golfers are actually required to play by official USGA rules, whether as professionals, in amateur tournaments, or in club championships. The vast majority of us, over 85% in fact, play golf for recreational reasons. And the vast majority of that 85% play “for fun,” according to a recent Google Survey commissioned by Polara.

So yeah, golf is overly challenging. Not for professionals—they should be held to the strictest rules. But for everyone else? Traditional golf is too rigid, inconvenient, long, and costly for its own good. Which is why millions are abandoning the sport and hundreds of courses are shutting down.

The good news is that golf is changing for the better. With the help of companies like Polara, the game is getting faster, more exciting, less costly, and more inclusive. In addition to our patented balls, we’re working on even more equipment to help you get the most out of the sport.

The reason: Golf is a game. Go have fun.®

New Survey Reveals That Most Golfers Are Bending The Rules

Independent survey conducted by Google Consumer Surveys finds 73% of golfers admit to not following the rules, fewer than 15% keep a handicap, 78% play solely for fun and 63% would consider playing non-conforming equipment in an effort to maximize their enjoyment of the game.

CARLSBAD, CA  – While most of the marketing efforts of the golf industry paint golf as a hallowed, formal and uncontaminated game, where the primary aspiration is to become a PGA Tour player, the reality is quite different. According to a new survey conducted by Google Consumer Surveys, the vast majority of golfers regularly disregard the rules, have no idea what a USGA Handicap is and are increasingly turning to non-conforming equipment in an effort to maximize their enjoyment of the rigorous but popular game.

Based on more than 6,800-screened Internet respondents, here are six key findings:

•An overwhelming majority of golfers admit to bending the official rules of the game; 61% of respondents said they sometimes take mulligans, gimme putts and other popular infractions such as using a “foot wedge.” An additional 12% said they always bend the rules, while 27% claimed to have never broken the rules during play.

•Most golfers aren’t even aware of specific rules. 72% said they have never read the USGA’s Rules of Golf, which dictate standards for professional play, competitive amateur tournaments and club championships.

•The overwhelming majority of golfers are “recreational golfers” and have no desire to follow the same standards as professional golfers. The survey found that fewer than 15% of respondents keep an official USGA handicap, and a similar number are not even sure what a USGA handicap is.

•Most golfers play for fun–78% in fact. Just 22% played golf according to more formal or stringent rules such as the USGA’s Rules of Golf because they play for the challenge, for work or to be an aspiring professional.

•A majority 63% of golfers said they would consider using golf equipment that was banned from professional play but allowed for recreational use. 37% of respondents said they would not consider playing professionally banned equipment.

•One in five Americans has played golf; 21% answered yes or sometimes.

The survey comes as the golf industry faces some interesting challenges. According to the National Golf Foundation (NGF), golf rounds fell from 518 million to 475 million in the past decade and declined for the 5th consecutive year in 2011. The numbers of golfers stood at 26.1 million at the end of 2010, down from 30 million in 2005. Golfers are leaving the game, largely due to inconvenient rules, excessive play times and high costs.

“The results of this Google survey confirm our own statistics,” said Dave Felker, head of technology for Polara Golf. “The majority of golfers are looking for a little help with their game. They’re fine with the idea of playing with recreational golf equipment such as our anti-slice golf balls which remove a lot of frustration and allows them to have more fun on the course.”

Methodology: Conducted by Google Consumer Surveys, November 08-14, 2012 and based on 6,824 screened responses with 95% confidence. Commissioned by Polara Golf Company. Sample: National adult Internet population.

Polara Golf issues Official Statement on USGA's Proposed Rule 14-1b

CARLSBAD, CA. - November 29, 2012 - The U.S. Golf Association and the R&A announced a proposed rules change Wednesday that would ban anchoring a golf club while making a stroke. According to these governing bodies, the proposed Rule 14-1b is not based on performance, but instead deals with the fundamentals and traditions of the game.

Dave Felker, inventor of the Polara Anti-Slice golf ball and Head of Technology for Polara Golf issued an official statement on behalf of the company today regarding the USGA's and R&A's latest announcement.

"Today's USGA and R&A proposed ruling that would prohibit anchoring the club in making a stroke is just another example of how the USGA has lost touch with the majority of golfers and the golf industry itself," said Felker. "Anchoring long putters has been a practice used by golfers for many years and is actually in keeping with the longest tradition of golf - the evolution of golf equipment and methods to help golfers achieve a higher level of performance. Why now, when golf is suffering from such a huge exodus of players from the game, would the ruling bodies propose a change that will make the game that much more difficult and frustrating for millions of golfers? Has the industry not suffered enough in the last few years that we need yet another straw placed on our back? This proposed ruling is totally inconsistent with the golf industry's recent efforts like the PGA's Golf 2.0 Initiative which is designed to help grow the game and Polara Golf's introduction of products like the Ultimate Straight golf ball, the first ball to dramatically reduce hooks and slices."

Felker went on to say, "Polara Golf is the first golf technology company to solely and deliberately design golf equipment that exceeds the equipment limits imposed by the USGA Rules of Golf and does so for the direct benefit and enjoyment of recreational golfers. So it should come as no surprise that we are opposed to today's proposed ruling. Our position is wholly consistent with the results of a recent survey, commissioned by Polara Golf, which found that the vast majority of golfers have never read the USGA Rules of Golf, admit to often not abiding by the Rules of Golf and are not opposed to using equipment that will further their enjoyment of the game even if the equipment is not allowed by the Rules of Golf. I hope the vast majority of golfers from around the world who simply play golf for fun will express their dissatisfaction with today's proposed ruling as well."

About Polara Golf
Polara Golf's mission is "To make the game of golf more fun". Polara Golf uses the best available technology to create demonstrably superior products that exceed the USGA Rules of Golf and are limited only by the Laws of Physics. All of the Polara golf balls are designed for use by recreational golfers who want to take advantage of technology improvements designed to help them enjoy the game more.

Polara among the highest rated golf balls on Amazon

Nov. 15, 2012—I’ve been an avid shopper of Amazon — the largest online retailer in America — for more than a decade. Over the last five years, I’ve placed at least one order per month, often times as many as one week, it’s such a great store.

In that time, I’ve learned that it takes a special product to rate 4 stars or higher among user reviews. On average, most Amazon products are rated from 3–3.5 stars out of 5. As a rule of thumb, though not always, I gravitate towards products that rate 4 stars or higher, especially ones with at least 100 or more reviews.

That said, it’s nice to see Polara balls rating as some of the highest on Amazon. Take, for example, the original Ultimate Straight and Ultimate Straight XS, each rated 4 out of 5 stars, better than the popular Pro V1 ball.

And although still new to the market and working on amassing more user reviews, the new Extra Distance ball also rates 4 out of 5 stars.

As for the Extra Distance + Spin (our finest ball, by the way), it’s trending even better: 4.5 stars out of 5, among the highest of all golf ball ratings on Amazon.

So you see, players aren’t just talking about how much they like Polara balls. They’re actually validating their remarks with independent reviews.

Golf is a game. Go have fun.®

Golf Ball Eliminates Slicing - Banned By USGA for Tournament Play

Imagine the unbridled joy of consistently hitting fairways. The ability to hit the ball straight makes playing golf faster, less expensive and much more fun; fewer lost balls to replace, less time searching and hunting for wayward drives and above all, greater enjoyment and the improved self respect and satisfaction that comes with shooting lower scores! The Polara self-correcting ball does all of that by reducing hooks and slices up to 75%. A unique, asymmetrical dimple pattern positions shallow dimples around the ball’s equator and deeper dimples at the poles. One glance and you clearly see the Polara difference. Try them and you’ll undoubtedly experience the self-correcting effect. Golf Tips Magazine reported, “If you’re a recreational golfer who tends to find the rough more than the fairway, your fast track to straighter shots has arrived. No, it’s not a new training aid, over sized draw driver or magic swing tip. It’s a golf ball that flies straight, even when you put a slice swing on it.”

Robotic Testing Validates Claims

Polara went to Golf Labs in San Diego to validate their self-correcting ball’s performance and the results were eyeopening. During robotic testing where a significant slice was induced, on average, Polara balls reduced the slicing effect by 75% over traditional balls including premium brands. Golf Labs director Gene Parente states, “We set up the Golf Labs robot to simulate a 90 foot slice based on launch conditions of an average golfer. With the nonconforming Polara Ultimate Straight golf ball we found that compared to several popular conforming golf balls, which all sliced about 90 feet, the Polara ball corrected up to 70 feet of the 90 foot slice.”

Garnering National Acclaim

Bill Pennington (New York Times) wrote, “The design of the (Polara) ball corrects slices and hooks by 75 percent. When I took the ball to a New Jersey driving range, regular golfers and the occasional pro could not slice or hook the ball with any regularity.”

Veteran journalist Ron Claiborne (ABC News, Good Morning America) reported,” I carefully teed up a Polara ball, arrow on top, as instructed. I reared back and let it rip. The ball soared high into the sky, arched and landed on the fairway about 250 yards away. It had flown straight and true from tee to landing. I was in shock. “No slice!” I exclaimed. I hit another Polara. The same thing. And another. I simply could not hit a bad shot. It was a miracle.”

Polara balls are designed for the vast majority of golfers who are recreational players, ones who want to take advantage of technology improvements; those who want to have fun playing golf. “We’re not trying to remove the skill from the game,” said Polara’s director of R&D, David Felker. “We’re just trying to remove the frustration.”

Since switching to the Polara ball several months ago, I almost always shoot in the 70’s. Last week I recorded a 71, three strokes lower than my previous best, though I've only been playing for 25 years. There were shots I knew I missed, but the Polara corrected my mistakes. Shooting lower scores makes playing golf more fun and far less frustrating. Coincidently, I'm eager to play more.

They said it: Polara balls a hit in online user reviews

Recognition is awesome. Whether by the media or end consumers, few things in life are better than being recognized. Which is why it’s so gratifying to see praise and excitement heaped upon our popular self-correcting golf ball, which averages 4.5 stars out of 5 online.

Below is a collection of some of our favorite reviews; unscripted testimonials, if you will, from the people that actually buy, use, and recommend Polara balls:

“For those of you that go out on the weekends for a relaxing game of golf and could use a little more accuracy and improved play, these are for you! They help me enjoy a morning or afternoon of golf even more. I would not hesitate to buy another box.”—Ken Hada, Thousand Oaks, CA

“Polara balls are the best thing that have happened to my golf game. They give me so much confidence right off the tee. My golf buddy calls me Par Man now.”—Tom MacKinnon

“I just want to thank you guys. After years of suffering from a poor swing, I now have the confidence to play a much better game of golf.”—Jonathan Ferranto

“I’ve played golf for 50 years and see nothing wrong with using Polaras so long as they’re not played in tournaments. They keep the game moving. Nothing’s worse than a five hour round of golf.”—Anonymous

“Polara: The best thing to ever happen to my game. Dropped a stroke per hole.”—John Dahl

“They definitely do what they are advertised to do. They go straight unless the golfer hits a seriously bad shot. So when I am having a slicing or hooking day, I switch to Polaras.”—Joseph Stuessy

“The ball is expensive, but you can save on balls by not losing them in the trees or water. It's well worth it.”—Toua Yang

“I don't know how the technology works and I don't care; Polara golf balls go straight every time. As for them being banned from professional play: Legal schmegal. Since I'm not on the PGA tour, I don't care about that either.”—Ken Peters

“After playing these, I don’t want to play other balls ever again.”—Anonymous

“I do not normally write reviews, but I feel compelled to write about the Polara golf balls. I have a bad slice and have played golf for over 30 years and have not been able correct my slice even with professional lessons. I ordered a sample of Polara golf balls and was thrilled with the results. I was actually on the fairway instead of landing in the right hand trees and/or rough.”—Larry G.

“I started using Polara Golf balls last year. They have definitely helped me enjoy the game
more, and to look forward to playing. It's a lot more fun playing from the fairway.”—Tom Hinrichs

Power play: 5 tips that make Polara balls even more awesome

For recreational players (i.e. 85% of all golfers), Polara balls make golf more enjoyable, faster, and less expensive. Obviously, the reason the balls sell is because they work in correcting up to 75% of hooks and slices.

But there are even things the ball can do that you might not be aware of. For example:

1. Point the arrow at the target to get max correction on drives. This may seem like a no brainer, but it’s important to remember this is how to achieve maximum slice correction.

2. To maximize distance off the tee with the Polara Ultimate Straight ball, use a 12 degree driver or even a three wood. This ensure you get the same if not better distance from the Ultimate Straight, which uses reduced lift to correct 75% slice.

3. When approaching a green with a short iron, align the arrow perpendicular to the target to get maximum height, grip, and backspin. (Note: The ball has a lower moment of inertia when spinning with the arrow perpendicular to the direction of the target).

4. In the fairway, if you line the arrow up with your target on iron shots you will get 1-2 club lengths more distance. I don’t always play with Polara arrows in the fairway, but when I do, I get a lot better distance.

5. Play both Ultimate Straight and XD depending on the hole. On narrow fairways, use the Ultimate Straight for maximum straightness. Then use the XD on wide fairways for maximum distance (more here).

There you have it. Just a few more ways to make your next game with Polara’s even better.

Anti-slice ball: It takes a golfer to know one

During a recent Polara pow-wow discussing future marketing plans, an issue came up that some of us had never thought of.

Turns out, you need to hit conforming (i.e. slicing) golf balls before understanding the power of the dark side... er, I mean anti-slicing Polara golf balls. (Please note: I don’t really think Polara is the golf ball of choice of Darth Vader. I’m just poking fun at the idea that recreational balls are somehow detrimental to the hallowed game of golf, as some puritan pundits believe.)

But I digress. The subject came up after a reviewer, new golfer, and Polara Challenge participant commented recently that he didn’t notice any of the golf ball’s stated benefits. Incidentally, the man had never hit tournament-legal golf balls with any regularity, so he didn’t understand that slice affects upwards of 66% of all golfers, and that he would have otherwise missed a lot more fairways playing with traditional balls.

That may seem like a big old “duh” to some, but it was a helpful reminder to me that not everyone is familiar enough with golf to now how much a pain in the arse slicing can be for players at all levels. To welcome and include people of all backgrounds and wisdom levels, which is what Polara aims to do with golf balls and equipment that make the game a lot more accessible, enjoyable, and affordable, in addition to curing a golf slice..

So if you’re interested in golf but have never played, we encourage you to hit a bucket of balls at your local driving range. But before the ones who struggle most with that right of passage and prematurely leave the game in a fit of rage because you’re hooking the golf ball, give our balls a try. They’ll blow your socks off, I promise.

The more you know.

As seen on Fox News: “Sorry our original ball worked so well”

Horn tootin’ time!

Once again, Polara was featured in Fox News recently. What’s great about this story is that it really captures the essence of our new golf ball, the Polara XD, short for extra distance.

“The original Polara Ultimate Straight golf ball comes at a price: lower lift, which reduces distance,” the report explains. “That’s not an issue for players who would otherwise live in the rough at the sides of the course. But it is for moderate slicers. So Polara released a second self-correcting golf ball this year, the XD, with 25 percent less correction and more lift.”

Our very own Dave Felker had this to say: “Critical reception to our original ball last year was phenomenal. But some of our customers didn’t like the compromise in distance, so we devised a ball with 50 percent correction instead of the original 75 percent. The result is a ball that gives people as much distance as normal golf balls, while still mitigating slice.

“If the first wasn’t right for you, this is perfect.”

In other words, no two golfers are bad in quite the same way. Hence the need for our second ball to ensure everyone can get the most out of the anti-slice revolution.

To find out which game improvement golf ball is right for you, read this. Then head over to Fox News to read the full profile of the new Polara XD. And if you haven’t already, don’t miss the first story they did on us last year, Banned But Awesome.

Top 12 Ways to “Cheat” at Golf

Golf is hard. Make it easier by employing one or all of the below “strategies.”

1. Take a drop on an errant tee shot instead of returning to the tee. USGA rules say a lost or out of bounds tee shot must be rehit from the tee. You also have to take a stroke penalty. Of course, this will add lots of time to round, but rules are rules, people. Hence, the majority of players take drops instead.

2. Play a scramble. The popular team tournament format is a lot of fun. Play the best lie, and leave the course happy, regardless of your personal performance. Of course, this format is also illegal according to USGA rules. So don’t do it anymore. Unless of course you play golf for your own enjoyment instead of being a Golf Puritan.

3. Pick up and clean your ball. Muddy golf balls are lame and can screw up your shot. Do the right thing and pick them up to clean or improve your lie. And by right thing I really mean cheat.

4. Whack away surrounding plant life for better swing access. Bushes and tree limbs are always getting in the way of my swing. Thankfully, my iron doubles as sickle. Having played golf for 17 years, I don’t think I’ve ever played with a group of friends that welcomes swing improvement without literally picking up the ball.

5. Score with gimme putts. The gimme putt has always made me chuckle. It ranges anywhere from two inches to two feet depending on the time of day and one’s performance. Of course, it too is verboten in USGA play. (And yet, 99% of all players implore some variation of this.)

6. Throw the ball or toss it instead of dropping it. What’s the point of “dropping” if you can’t improve your current predicament? At least that’s what my grandfather always used to say. So unless you're a professional or in an official USGA sanctioned tournament, most players go with a light toss to avoid the really rough stuff.

7. Standing behind a player while s/he putts. It doesn’t matter that if you’re engaged in a friendly round of golf. This is against USGA rules and should not be allowed under any circumstances.

8. Carrying more than 14 clubs. When’s the last time you checked your buddy’s club count? If you insist on playing USGA rules at all times, you better check. Chances are at least one of your play partners is packing extra clubs.

9. Asking your play partners what club they hit. Another no-no. And it doesn’t matter if you’re still trying to learn the game. Playing a round is not the time to improve your game. That’s what practice is for. Remember, a golf course is hallowed ground. Don’t disrespect it by learning a thing or two as you play on them in a friendly competition.

10. Grounding your club on practice swings. Never, ever ground your club while practicing a shot. You are only allowed to air swing. Same goes for sand trap practice swings. We wouldn’t want anyone improving their ball strike before hand, now would we? Either get with the program or get out of the game.

11. Putting with the flag pole in. I don’t care if your incredible approach shot is only inches away from the hole. Always remove the flag pole or suffer the one stroke penalty. What are we playing for fun or something? This game is serious and should be treated as such at all times and all places.

12. Play an antislice golf ball. Why did I title my story with “cheat” in quotations? In addition to being facetious and sensational, it was also to prove a point, which is this: While all 12 of the above behaviors are banned in professional and other USGA sanctioned tournaments, they are perfectly acceptable for the 85% of golfers that play for recreational, social, and convenience reasons. A self-correcting Polara golf ball is no different. It improves your golf game, thus making the game more enjoyable by playing from the fairway, losing fewer balls, and speeding up play. The anti-slice golf balls work so well, they were even praised in a feature by Fox News!

Of course, Polara Golf will never condone moral cheaters that lie about their score — that’s wrong in any context. But we welcome all of the above in the appropriate setting (which is how recreational golf is played).

Getting it right: Polara golf balls are for slicers, not just beginners

Are Polara balls only for beginners?

That’s the conclusion of a recent online review of our patented Ultimate Straight and Ultimate Straight XS balls. But the conclusion (or assumption for that matter) is dead wrong.

Polara self-correcting balls are for anyone that hit slice or hook shots, which account for the majority of players, and for golfers looking to improve their golf game.

Yes, beginners often struggle with slice more than experienced players. But I’ve been playing golf for 17 years and slice my shots a lot more than is tolerable as a recreational, casual, and weekend golfer.
The same is true for most players. “Two thirds of male golfers have a slice problem,” says Polara president Dave Felker. “That probably works out to about 15-16 million male golfers in the US alone.”

Obviously, it’s a big problem—one that can be combated with a lifetime of practice, for sure. Or in the case of professional players, raw talent.

But what about the rest of us? The 85% that play golf for recreational and casual reasons and don’t have the natural skill, time or tolerance to dedicate a lifetime to the game?

There’s Polara self-correcting golf balls. The correct up to 90% of all golf slices. In addition to correcting your golf slice, Polara’s accuracy golf balls also correct hooks and are guaranteed to improve your overall golf game.

Simply put, the golf balls just work. But don’t take our word for it. Just ask the New York Times, Fox News, CNBC, and the many other reviewers and consumers that have become believers after seeing the balls in action.

In a perfect world, there would be no slice. So long as there is, Polara will be by your side to help improve your golf game by curing hooks and slices.

Training for Your Olympic Quest or Your Next Round...

Take your game to the next level--- 2016 Summer Olympics or just next weekend.

Fitness-- The summer is the best time to regain that fitness level crucial to hours of training on the range or around the green. Grab the terrier and take off walking for 3-4 miles a day, maybe follow with a nice swim and you are certainly on your way to the qualifier for the Rio Olympics. Donʼt forget to add a little weight training with your aerobic activities to add that extra 30-40 yards off the tee when you need to punish one.

Plan your Strategy for the next 4 years-- Developing a solid 4 year plan will take a few hours with your mates, preferably after 18 holes in a cool hydrating atmosphere. When you arrive home ready to announce your lofty goal to the smarter half of the team, be confident, and calmly explain with their help, putting in more hours at work and mowing the lawn weekly, that over the next 4 years, greatness is within reach, and possibly GOLD. (Maybe mention gold prices are very high too)

This will be the toughest part of winning Gold-- Convincing your spouse of the preceding strategy. This could take weeks or months to accomplish. You really have to strike quick while the Olympics are fresh and adrenaline is still registering slightly in your bloodstream. Donʼt underestimate the power of bribery in your presentation. I offered to make matching gold earrings for my wife for those nights I wear the medallion out to dinner with friends.

Hire a former PGA Tour Player for full time coaching-- You know how to play golf, you even hit 6-8 excellent shots a day. Now the critical part of the plan starts to take hold with the experience of a Tour player working with you on swing analysis, equipment, course management, conditioning, nutrition, wine tasting, short game, and planning your next 3-4 years competing around the globe. This could get a little expensive so once again very important for the spouse to cut the budget with less important purchases.

Be patient during the Process-- Even the greatest player of our generation has to accept that golf takes many reps for many months to accomplish the consistency needed to dominate and win the big events. Golf has to be the toughest game to Master and when a middle aged man with a part time job goes for the Gold in Rio it will take all the patience and dedication one can muster.

Good luck and see you in Rio !

The Breakfast Balls' Death Valley Challenge was Truly Death-Defying

Our friends at The Breakfast Ball had a huge idea for a crazy challenge to raise money for The First Tee of Southern Nevada. They played four straight rounds of golf (that is 72 holes) in 120+ degree weather in Death Valley at Furnace Creek Golf Course.

With the help of Polara Golf and several other companies, The Breakfast Ball Boys DID IT and captured every minute of it through photos and on-the-go journalism. Along the way they saw many walks of wildlife, as it was just them and Mother Nature out on the course that day, and drank themselves into a water coma (48 bottles consumed between the two of them in 12 hours). The Pro Shop guy of Furnace Creek told them that he has never seen anyone play 4 straight rounds at Furnace Creek in July before. Way to go gentleman, I think you set a record for sane golfers with the most rounds played in excessive heat.

As round after round was completed, they could start to feel the day and the course wearing on them. The balls weren't stopping on the greens like they were the first round, a couple of mis-hits were made and a few more strokes on some holes than they wanted were counted. But who cares, they were out there to support a great organization, The First Tee of Southern Nevada. It's all about the kids and spreading the word to grow the game of golf (in extreme weather conditions even).

Quote from Breakfast Balls', Mathew, "It’s not the best or coolest (no pun intended) record but it’s ours and it’s one of my proudest moments.  Well that’s not entirely true. What I was most proud about was that I had come up with this idea, put it into action and pulled off a fundraiser for The First Tee of Southern Nevada in a ridiculous location, in crazy hot weather 200 feet below sea level and in less than 4 months! Score one for the good guys!"

This truly is a story for the record books. I am so glad that Polara participated in this extreme event and we would do it again in a second. The boys were able to raise $700 for The First Tee of Southern Nevada.

Make a donation to The First Tee of Nevada and show your support to The Breakfast Balls' Mathew and Bill for donating their time and efforts for a great cause. To read the full play by play recap,
part 1 and part 2.

"So this is my final plea to all of you out there, if you haven’t made a donation because of whatever reason take a look at what we did and why we did it," said Mathew of The Breakfast Ball. "The Kids, bottom line. Then, if you can, help us out by getting us to my $1,000 goal and let EVERYONE know, even the Kids at the First Tee that with a little Perseverance a little hard work and a couple loose screws upstairs in your head that you too can do anything when you set your mind to it! Thanks everyone! Without all of your help and support we would have been just two idiots playing golf in the middle of Death Valley just cause it was there. Yeah, I know. That still was the case!"

Polara Golf has finally introduced what recreational golfers all over the world have been looking for - a quick fix for their game. While other golf ball manufacturers “claim” to improve accuracy or reduce your hook or slice, the unique dimple design of the Polara Self-Correcting Technology™ golf ball actually does it!

Now even recreational golfers can play from the fairway instead of the rough, the woods, or the next fairway over. Using Polara golf balls is guaranteed to improve your game, increase your accuracy and lower your golf score, which makes the game more fun.

Polara Golf is offering four different Self-Correcting golf balls for 2012 - the original Ultimate Straight™ and Ultimate Straight XS™ and the new advanced XD™ and XDS™

The original Ultimate Straight™ and Ultimate Straight XS™ golf balls are designed for golfers whose #1 priority is to control hooks or slices. The radical sidespin-reducing characteristics of the Ultimate Straight™ and Ultimate Straight XS™ correct wayward shots by up to 75%.  The new advanced XDTM and XDSTM golf balls correct hooks and slices up to 50% and have a higher, more traditional trajectory which enables golfers to achieve Extra Distance.

“We gave the new XD™ and XDS™ golf balls a different lift and drag profile to make the balls fly higher, resulting in more carry distance,” said David Felker, PhD, and Head of Technology for Polara Golf.  “Now recreational golfers can choose the ball that is best suited for their game.”

Polara’s Self-Correcting golf balls are designed to help golfers increase their enjoyment of the game by curing the golf slice and eliminating hooks, and are perfectly fine for the recreational golfer to use every day on the course.

All four Polara Golf balls are available at www.polaragolf.com and retail golf stores nationwide.

Guest Blogger: Using Non-Conforming Products to Speed Up Play

Christian Costa is our guest blogger for the week. He uses non-conforming products to help speed up play and because the most important part of golf is having fun.

I think that a person can use non-conforming products if that person will never play in a USGA sanctioned tournament.  The most important part of golf is having fun, so if a person wants to use a product that makes the game more fun, then they should use it.  Another major issue in golf is slow-play.  If more people used non-conforming products, it would definitely speed up the pace of play.  However, it is important that players don't use non-conforming products in friendly competitions (e.g. bets, wagers, etc.) unless the opponent has agreed with the use of such a product.  Considering the fact that the average golfer breaks the rules regularly (sometimes without being aware), I think that it is OK for a golfer to break the rules by using a non-conforming product.  Overall, I think that as long as a golfer is using non-conforming products for the fun and enjoyment of the game, and not for cheating in competition, then every golfer should use non-conforming products if they so desire.

The Golf Course Fitting System Powered by Polara Golf

At Polara Golf, we love to see new products being made with golfers in mind. Our friends at The Golf Course Fitting System™ have made a Facebook application where users can now go to design a golf course Tee-To-Green Personality™ that they would like to play.

The Golf Course Fitting System™ was designed by a PGA Golf Professional with a love for golf course design and a vision to create a better way for golfers to search for golf courses on the Internet.

For years golfers have searched for golf courses on the Internet by parameters such as rates, location, architect or rankings. While all of these parameters are useful for a golf course search, they leave a massive void in valuable information about the golf course’s design and layout that impact the actual “playability” of the golf course. The Golf Course Fitting System™ fills this void by placing this valuable “playability” information at the heart of the search criteria. Now golfers can quickly find golf courses that not only “fit” their budgets but “fit” their playing preferences as well.

There is also a web based application at www.golfcoursefitting.com. This innovative new web application may completely revolutionize the way golfers search for golf courses on the Internet.

This golf ball can't be sliced. The USGA agrees.

Just how well do Polara anti-slice golf balls work? So well the governing body of golf—the USGA—has banned them. Twice.

The first time was in 1981. Four years and hundreds of thousands of sold balls later, the USGA tested the golf balls for themselves and concluded that Polara did, in fact, correct hooks and slices.

Then they promptly added a rule to exclude the “spherically symmetrical” balls that two non-golfing Polara scientists had invented. That’s right—Polara self-correcting golf balls work so well in correcting golf hooks and slices that USGA reacted to them with a rule change.

That rarely happens. Even less so by the hand of an innovative equipment company.

The second “ban” came a year ago. After settling with Polara Golf to avoid an unfavorable anti-trust jury verdict in the ‘80s, the USGA agreed to pay Polara a lot of money in exchange for pulling the golf ball from market for a few decades.

The small company agreed, then returned last year with an even better self-correcting golf ball.

The USGA’s official response: “The description of the (new) ball indicates that it would not conform to The Rules, just as the 1980s version did not conform to The Rules.”

The song remained the same: “This ball still can’t be sliced.”

In fairness, the all-new Polara was never submitted to USGA for approval. We knew beforehand it wouldn’t conform. After all, our innovative dimple pattern technology resulted in the original ban.

But while all Polara anti-slice golf balls are banned from tournament play, they’re certainly not illegal for the vast majority of golf rounds being played.

"For recreational play, our golf ball is perfectly legal, along with other recreational golfer practices like mulligans, gimme putts, winter rules and other shot concessions or scramble play formats,” says Polara president Dave Felker.

“Less than 10% of golfers worldwide have an established amateur handicap,” he adds. “Less than 5% of rounds played worldwide are USGA or R&A sanctioned tournament play. So Polara balls are course legal for 95% of recreational golfer rounds worldwide."

More important than being an acceptable way of playing recreational golf, however, Polara balls actually make the game more enjoyable by improving a golfer's overall game.

“Polara Ultimate Straight and Extra Distance balls are all about hitting more fairways off the tee,” Felker says. “They are for people who want to be embarrassed less, play faster, lose fewer balls, and enjoy it more.

“Had Polara been around in the days of Mark Twain, instead of saying, ‘Golf is a good walk spoiled,’ Twain might have exclaimed, ‘Golf is a lot more fun from the fairway.'"

Polara: The golf ball for the rest of us (all 85% of you)

How dull and inconvenient would street basketball be if everyone insisted on playing NBA rules at all times? Fortunately for basketball, that doesn’t exist. And the game is better, more widely played, and more enjoyable because of it. The same is true of other sports.

The game of golf isn’t so lucky, however.

Many purist, elitist players, and top officials insist that all players should abide by professional standards at all times, even non tournament or recreational golfers. Either that or they turn a blind eye to customary rule infractions when it’s convenient for them. Think gimme putts, mulligans, scramble play, carrying more than 14 clubs, and failing to return to the tee after losing a driven ball—all of which are forbidden by the United States Golf Association.

Why the double standard? “Golf officials have failed to distinguish recreational players from tournament or professional ones,” says Dave Felker, president of Polara Golf. “As such, it’s expected that everyone plays by the same unbending rules. Not only is this unfair to recreational players, it’s unrealistic.”

What percentage of golfers, then, play solely for recreation? The number is staggering, says Felker, around 85%. According to recent estimates, just 15% of players keep a handicap or compete in USGA sanctioned tournaments—everything from club championships to The Masters. The other 85% play purely for fun or social reasons.

“When I was at Callaway Golf, we designed some of the best golf balls for some of the best professional and tournament players,” says Felker. “At Polara, we design the best golf ball for recreational players. Bottom line: We are just trying to help recreational golfers have more fun.”

But playing by USGA rules at all times isn’t just sucking some of the fun out of the game. It’s slowly killing it, Felker warns.

“More than 6% of the 16,000 courses in the country are in or near bankruptcy,” he says. “After a surge in players at the turn of the century, the number of participants is in sharp decline.

“So why not play a ball that makes the game more fun, quicker (because you don't spend as much time looking for it), less expensive (don't lose as many balls), and could bring new players to the game and bring former ones back?"

To validate his point, Felker notes other sports that have relaxed the rules in an effort to encourage more participants. Think oversized tennis rackets. Slow pitch softball. Non-conforming basketball rims. Pop Warner football. Even different engine classes in car racing. “All those changes were implemented to make those respective games more appealing to recreational participants,” Felker says.

Obviously, players need to abide by the rules when competing in a tournament. And there’s certainly value in taking lessons and aspiring to same standards used by professionals.

But only if that’s your goal, says Felker. “For the rest of us — all 85% of us — the goal is to have more fun. And playing golf from the fairway is a lot more fun than playing from the rough (or worse) out of bounds. Polara golf balls make that a reality for non tournament players.”

Guest Blogger: Using Non-Conforming Products Helps to Stay Competitive

Khurram Chohan is our guest blogger for the week. He is a recreational golfer and uses non-conforming products because it helps him perform to a better standard without the time commitment required to gain a single-digit handicap.

I'm an average golfer and love playing the game. I will never play in a USGA tournament as I play for the love of golf and not to compete at a tournament level. For me golf is a few hours away from the outside world and having some down time with my friends.

In order to make those few hours less frustrating it can help to use non conforming products such as golf balls and clubs. This helps me and my friend stay more competitive with each other and less frustration with hitting slices, hooks or shorter shots.

As we are all at a similar standard and not playing very regularly, the use of non-conforming products help us perform to a much better standard without the time commitment required to get down to a single figure handicap.

Generally speaking, if only for recreational use, non conforming products can help a player have a much more fulfilling and enjoyable golfing experience. This in turn helps in wanting to spend more time on the course and improving, as there is less negativity in your head when you are going to play your shot.

In my opinion there is no downside to non-conforming products when not in a tournament as they are there to help and assist in making our golfing experience more pleasurable.

Carlsbad, CA – Polara Golf announced today that their game changing XD Self-Correcting golf balls will take to the sky in support of Veteran Warbirds.

Home to more than 35 retired military aircrafts, and several educational exhibits, the AMC Museum has remained the only facility devoted to the history of refueling and airlift aviation.

On Thursday, July 12th, the AMC Museum Foundation will host their 8th Annual Golf Tournament at Jonathan’s Landing located in Magnolia, Delaware, in an effort to secure the rich history of the museum and ongoing dedication to the cause.

"The Air Mobility Command Museum has remained the number one free tourist attraction in the State of Delaware for the past several years. The proceeds from our golf tournament will help us fulfill the mission of the AMC Museum as an aviation and aerospace, education, scientific, cultural, historical, and inspirational facility for the general public and the Air Force community," said Phil White, Secretary of the AMC Museum Foundation Board.

Please join Polara Golf and the AMC Museum Foundation as we support the importance and value of aviation history to the surrounding community and future visitors. Registration will begin at 11:00 a.m. and end at 12:00 p.m. This 4-person scramble tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 12 noon. The cost, which includes golf with cart, buffet dinner, snacks/beverages, and possible hole-in-one prizes to include one of $10,000 from Ameriprise, is $85 per person, $75 for active duty Military Officers, and $55 for active duty Enlisted Personnel. Tournament prizes will be awarded at dinner following the round.
